Prayers for Tuesday's Family

Angelic Tuesday is in fact now an angel. Tuesday passed away yesterday. Please stop by the family's blog and let them know that your thoughts and prayers are with them. Losing a child is not easy...they will need support for quite a long time.

Welcome to Holland

Today we have finally recieved a diagnosis for Shelby and her extensive 'issues', Shelby has many of the markers for a disorder that is called "Sensory Processing Disorder". Basically she and her body do not process things the same way that you are I do. For example...to her a hug, rather than creating comfort, can cause anxiety, or someone looking at her to long can bring her to tears because there is too much contact, she hates having clothes on because of the way they 'feel' on her etc... the list goes on and on and I am sad... She doesn't enjoy things that most children should. Shelby has been a fighter from the very beginning...and she will continue to fight, but as her mommy I want to take her battle away, but with this new diagnosis on top of her others, it only makes her fight that much harder and that much more of a struggle. I know that I should be thankful that it is 'only' SPD, and that aside from her own personal 'quirks' my child is happy, healthy and amazing, (and I am... Lord knows that I am happy and thankful for my healthy children), but I can't help but mourn the other things... We are setting up some new appointments (just when we were celebrating finally being done with the PT/OT Dept---WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!!) and we will go from there. Shelby will also be evaluated by our special education preschool... and I will certainly keep you all up to date on what is going on with her... but please read the following poem...I have had this poem in my journal since the girls were born and required NICU time, it has helped me several times over and over...and I know that I will be able to pull strength from this wonderful poem once again...

WELCOME TO HOLLAND
byEmily Perl Kingsley.

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."

"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."

But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.

But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.

As a childhood cancer survivor myself, this story has touched me beyong belief...especially now being a mommy and a mommy of twins. Please stop by this blog and offer up some prayers for this family. They certainly need them. The road they are about to embark on is not an easy one... May God's glory and love surrond them all during this time....

YAY ME!!!

My poor friend was on the phone with my Tuesday when these arrived in the mail... I hope that she has gotten her hearing back from the squeal that I let out!!! I was so pumped to finally see my name on the degrees!! GO ME!!!!

Lookin Fine For Valentines- Week 4

I really think that women who are of child baring age, who are also trying to lose weight should be given a 'bye' week each month.... Don't you?

I am sure from that statement you guys can tell how my weekly weigh in went today... But honestly, I shouldn't be to upset at it was only 2 pounds and I know that by this time next week without me doing a darn thing it will be gone....but it is still sad, especially since now I have to remove the my badge of weightloss from my side bar :(

That being said, I have a renewed sense of self and will be kicking it hardcore this week. Here are my goal:

  • Drink at least 84 ozs of water each day
  • Actually sign up for Weight Watchers
  • Stay with in my points for WW and journal ALL FOOD
  • exercise 3 days at home using videos, dvds etc
  • make it to the gym twice

So there are my goals for this week! Wish me luck my friends!
